Curación periodontal después del tratamiento con el raspador sónico Titán-S y con instrumentos manuales

    Recientemente se han presentado varios tipos de raspadores sónicos como alternativa al instrumental ultrasónico utilizado en el tratamietno periodontal. El objetivo de esta investigación fue comparar clínicamente la curación periodontal. El objetivo de esta investigación fue comparar clínicamente la curación periodontal después del tratamiento con el raspador sónico Titan-S®, con el efectuado con instrumentos manuales. Participación en el estudio doce pacientes remitidos de la Escuela de Higiene Dental de Jönköping, Suecia, para el tratamiento de periodontitis moderadamente avanzada. Tras la exploración, diagnóstico, plan de tratamiento e información, los dientes de los cuadrantes izquierdo y derecho se asignaron aleatoriamente al raspado con Titan-S® o con instrumentos manuales. El tratamiento fue efectuado por 6 estudiantes de higienista dental. La exploración final fue efectuada tres meses después de la instrumentación.

    Después del tratamiento se obtuvo una notable mejoría del estado periodontal, expresado en el número de superficies dentales con placa, número de puntos con una profundidad de sondaje mayor o igual a 4 mm. y porcentaje de puntos que mostraron hemorragia al sondaje del fondo de la bolsa. No se observó diferencia en los resultados cuando se compararon la instrumentación manual y la instrumentación con Titán-S®. El tiempo requerido para instrumentación fue, no obstante, menor con Titán-S® que con instrumentos manuales.

    Basándose en los resultados de este estudio, puede llegarse a la conclusión de que en pacientes con periodontitis moderadamente avanzada, la curación periodontal después del raspado con Titán-S® y de la instrumentación manual es comparable.

    Several types of air turbine scalers have recently been introduced as an alternative to ultrasonic equipment in periodontal therapy. The aim of this investigation was to compare clinical, periodontal healing after scaling with the Titan S® air turbine scaler and hand instruments.

    Twelve patients referred to the School of Dental Hygiene, Jönköping, Sweden, for treatment of moderately advanced periodontitis participated in the study. After examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, and information, the teeth of the left and right quadrants were randomly assigned to Titan S® or hand instruments scaling ("split mouth design"). The treatment was given by 6 dental hygiene students. Final re-examination was performed 3 months after instrumentation.

    After treatment, a marked improvement of periodontal conditions, expressed as number of tooth surfaces with plaque, number of sites with probing pocket depth ≥4 mm and percentage of sites showing bleeding on probing to the bottom of the pocket, was obtained. No difference in results was observed when comparing Titan S® and hand instrumentation. The time required for instrumentation was, however, shorter for Titan S® than for hand instruments.

    Based on the results of this study, it may be concluded that, in patients with moderately advanced periodontitis, periodontal healing after scaling with the Titan S® and hand instruments is comparable.
