Símbolos Nacionais Portugueses: manutenção ou mudança?

    In the present article, one intends to present the Portuguese National Symbols through a legal and historical definition. One stresses the co-relation between Portuguese national identity, its symbols and the role of communication technologies in its formation, maintaining or changing. On one hand, symbols are understood as centripetal elements of cohesion reinforced by media. On the other hand, Portuguese National Symbols are presented as the result of an evolutionary process which can be identified with the History of Portugal, its leaders and the political power.

    To understand the feeling about the Portuguese National Symbols, one used an inquiry asking what the respondents (aged with less than 35 years old and inhabiting the district of Lisbon) thought about the Portuguese National Symbols and what would they change if they could. Finally, one complements her findings observing web petitions and personal websites where movements appealing to the Portuguese National Symbols change are presented.

    The results show the Portuguese attachment to their National Symbols and their agreement with its maintenance after the 25th April 1974 Revolution.

    No presente artigo pretendo apresentar os Símbolos Nacionais portugueses tendo em conta a sua definição legal e histórica. Para tal, relaciono a identidade nacional portuguesa, os seus símbolos e o papel das tecnologias da comunicação na sua formação, manutenção ou mudança. Por um lado, os símbolos são entendidos como elementos centrípetos de coesão reforçados pelos media. Por outro, os Símbolos Nacionais Portugueses são apresentados como o resultado de um processo evolucionário que pode ser identificado no devir histórico de Portugal, seus líderes e poder político.

    Para compreender o sentimento que rodeia os Símbolos Nacionais Portugueses, utilizei a metodologia do inquérito, aplicado a uma amostra de conveniência de indivíduos com menos de 35 anos residentes no distrito de Lisboa, questionando a atitude dos inquiridos em relação ao objecto e o que mudariam nos Símbolos Nacionais Portugueses caso pudessem. Esta metodologia foi complementada com a análise de petições e sítios na Internet onde é feito o apelo à mudança dos Símbolos Nacionais Portugueses.

    Os resultados mostram um apego dos portugueses aos seus Símbolos Nacionais e a sua concordância com a manutenção dos mesmos após a Revolução de 25 de Abril de 1974.
