What would it mean to declare that we are all experts in textiles? This article examines several key works made in the 1970s by US women artists of color that use or depict cloth to assert the centrality of textiles to issues of race, gender, and labor. Woven together with a memory of a personal encounter with the needlework of Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party", the author calls for an intimate methodology in our approach to textiles, grounded in the politics of sensation.
