    El estado vegetativo se define como un estado en el cual el paciente no tiene percepción de sí mismo ni de su entorno. El concepto �persona� aparece en la discusión cuando se argumenta que dicho individuo, aunque biológicamente vivo, no existe ya en tanto que persona. Aquí se propone, en primer lugar, partir de algunos argumentos filosóficos para reflexionar sobre el estatus moral de estos pacientes. Y, en segundo lugar, teniendo en cuenta la fundamentación teórica y el papel de los avances neurocientíficos, analizar la cuestión práctica referente a la toma de decisiones sobre la retirada de la nutrición e hidratación artificial.

    The vegetative state is a state in which the patient has no awareness of himself or his environment. The concept of the “person” appears in the discussion when it is argued that the individual, although biologically alive, no longer exists as a “person”. Here I proposed, firstly, to reflect on the moral status of these patients from some philosophical arguments. And, secondly, taking into account the theoretical foundation, and the role of neuroscientific advances, it is aimed to analyze the practical implications regarding the decision-making process on the withdrawal of artificial nutrition and hydration.
