Resumen de Los arquitectos y la falta de memoria: El proyecto como coartada para el olvido: El parque José Domingo Gómez Rojas en Santiago y el edificio del Congreso en Valparaíso

  ¿Cuán rápido olvidan las ciudades y los países? ¿Cuál es el papel de la arquitectura en este proceso? ¿Cómo opera la memoria colectiva cuando surge la oportunidad de reemplazar una memoria por otra? Este artículo busca explorar estas cuestiones, basándose en dos casos de estudio en Chile: el Parque José Domingo Gómez Rojas (Santiago) y el Edificio del Congreso (Valparaíso). A través del análisis de la historia y las polémicas que ambos casos han levantado, se intentará discutir cómo el trabajo de los arquitectos influye sobre el proceso del olvido, ya sea borrando el pasado a través de la renovación urbana, o ayudando a blanquear un periodo de la historia reciente. Se concluye la necesidad de enfrentar la responsabilidad de los arquitectos en la memoria, enfatizando las consecuencias negativas de un entendimiento inconsciente de su papel público a este respecto, y del tipo de trabajo que la profesión está llamada a cumplir.

  How quick do cities and countries forget of their own memories? What is the role of the architect in those processes? How does collective memory operate when the chance of replacing an old memory by a new one arises? This paper aims to explore these questions based on two Chilean case studies: the José Domingo Gomez Rojas Park (Santiago) and the Congress Building (Valparaíso). By analyzing the history and the polemics that both cases have raised, we will try to discuss how the work of the architect influences the processes of forgetting, whether by erasing the past through urban renewal, or even by helping to clean up an uncomfortable period of the history of a country. The conclussion asserts the necesity of addressing the responsibility the architect has with memory, stressing the negative consequences of an unconscious understanding of their public role in this regard, and of the kind of labor the profession is called to fulfill.
