Le voyageur et l'hôpital: Du Massif central à l'hôpital Saint-Louis-des-Français de Madrid, 1617-1935

    This article is meant to bring out the interest offered by hospital records for the study of a migratory movement. The example chosen is a medium-distance migration, concerning people leaving the Massif central for Spain. The subject of our observation is the "Hôpital de Saint Louis des Français" in Madrid. It was a small establishment, but one whose exiguity is offset - for the observer - by its longevity (1617-1935). This means thousands of entries and, for the historian, a stock-in-trade which, although deficient at times, sheds a new light on a migratory movement as long-lived as the hospital itself. Over three centuries, we can trace enduring regional and occupational trends as well as departures from those trends, whose statistics can be made. Thus, the standard Auvergnat who never fails to give his patronage to the Hôpital de Saint Louis des Français - more than a third of its inmates until the 19th century -, that itinerant provider of small services, can be seen to settle gradually in Madrid, confining himself to the bakery trade. If that occupational evolution can be easily discerned, a more subtle analysis makes it possible to detect the departures from the trends in the parishes from which they emigrated, and to make comparisons with other French migrants. Moreover, better than any other document, the Infirmary Register throws light on the often bidden side of émigration : disease, poverty and failure.

    Cet article est une réflexion sur l'intérêt que peuvent présenter les archives hospitalières pour l'étude d'un mouvement migratoire. L'exemple choisi est une migration à moyenne distance, l'émigration des habitants du Massif central vers l'Espagne. L'hôpital sous observation est l'hôpital de Saint-Louis-des-Français de Madrid ; il s'agit là d'un petit établissement dont l'exiguïté est compensée, pour l'observateur, par la longévité, 1617-1935 : des milliers d'entrées et une continuité d'archives qui, malgré bien des lacunes, apporte un éclairage sui generis à l'étude d'un mouvement migratoire aussi vivace que l'hôpital même. Sur trois siècles se dessinent des fidélités régionales et professionnelles mais aussi des glissements qui prêtent à statistique. Ainsi voit-on le classique Auvergnat, ce bon client de l'hôpital de Saint-Louis-des-Français (plus du tiers des effectifs jusqu'au XIXe siècle), ce prestataire ambulant de menus services, se fixer progressivement, à Madrid, dans la seule boulangerie. Si l'on décèle sans peine cette évolution professionnelle, une analyse plus fine permet de détecter les glissements dans les communes d'origine et d'établir des comparaisons avec d'autres migrants français. Mieux qu'aucun autre document, en outre, le "Registre d'Infirmerie" éclaire la face souvent cachée de l'émigration : la maladie, la misère, l'échec.
