    This paper is the synthesis of researches concerning the university hospitals of Gand, Liège and Louvain in Belgium. First, you will find an abstract of the analysis and main results. The interpretation topics are then approached with three different points of view : the sources, being hospital or medical records, their qualities and their limits ; the structure of the institutions and their consequences on the social structure of the patients ; the impact of the demographic transition. The hospital, which was one reserved to poor adults, has progressively been authorized to "non-profitables", children first, then old people, so that the ageing of patients largely exceds that of the population itself.

    Cet article est la synthèse de recherches menées sur les hôpitaux universitaires de Gand, Liège et Louvain en Belgique. Il propose, dans une première partie, un résumé des analyses et des principaux résultats. Les questions d'interprétation sont ensuite abordées sous trois angles : les sources, qu'il s'agisse des registres hospitaliers ou des dossiers médicaux, leurs qualités et leurs limites ; la structure des institutions et ses répercussions sur la structure sociale des patients ; l'impact de la transition démographique. L'hôpital, jadis réservé aux adultes indigents, s'est progressivement ouvert aux "non-rentables", enfants d'abord, vieillards ensuite, au point que le vieillissement des populations hospitalisées excède largement celui de l'ensemble de la population.
