This study examines the phenomenon of witchcraft in New Spain starting with the pre-Hispanic era. It reviews the influence of the Spanish absolute government and the Inquisition in New Spain, the interventions of Friar Juan de Zumárraga and Diego de Landa, the papal bulls of John XXII (1326) and Innocent VIII (1484) that decreed witchcraft to be a form of heresy and which allowed the Holy Office to process it, the Malleus Maleficarum written by Kramer and Sprenger (1486), and the Manual de los Inquisidores by Eimeric and Peña (1503). This article also analyzes defining traits and characteristics that a witch should possess in order to be considered as such, as well as the number of magical or superstitious manifestations that occurred in Mexican territory. It concludes with the case of a witch from Autlán, in New Galicia, during the eighteenth century, his perceptions and actions
