La menace comme acte de langage: étude diachronique de quelques formules de français

    This paper aims at analyzing, within the frame of Oxford pragmatics, a very peculiar speech act, threatening and the instanciations of that act in a diachronic study which runs from old French to modern French. First we describe the constructions including the verb "menacer" and we see that threatening belongs to the class of indirect acts, then we analyze the oblique formulas that convey them. Finally we bring out the predominance of verbs borrowed from the lexicon of market terms, which indicates the concern for maintaining, even in fiction, a normalized linguistic interchange.

    Cet article se propose d'analyser, dans la perspective pragmatique de l'École d'Oxford, un acte de langage très particulier, la menace, et les instanciations de cet acte dans une étude diachronique qui va de l'ancien français au français moderne. Après avoir décrit les constructions où entrait le verbe "menacer" et constaté que la menace faisait partie des actes de langage indirects, on a analysé les formules détournées qui les véhiculaient ; on a pu constater le rôle capital tenu par des verbes empruntés au vocabulaire du marché, "comparer" et "vendre" en ancien français, "payer" en français moderne, marquant le souci de maintenir, fût-ce fictivement, un échange linguistique normalisé.
