  • This is a new essay section of the journal, but set firmly within its tradition of opening up provocative topics for scholarly discussion and inquiry.

    X is a mobile symbol. It can refer to something very specific like a cross on a map, yet in algebra it refers to the yet to be known, or in common parlance an enigmatic and rare quality of character. For our new section, X marks out the subject matter for an essay; it is both fixing and yet refuses to be fixed.
