Prevalence of Diabetes in Chinese Adults

  • Dr Xu and colleagues1 estimated the prevalence of diabetes among a representative sample of Chinese adults at 11.6% and the prevalence of prediabetes at 50.1%. According to the Chinese National Nutrition and Health Survey (CNNHS) in 2002,2 the prevalence of diabetes was 2.6% among Chinese adults. Although the difference in the prevalence of diabetes might be partly explained by an increase in diabetes during the 8 years between the studies, we question the current diabetes prevalence among Chinese adults.
