    Historical Materialism has a History Too. As a general rule nowadays, anyone who seeks to defend historical materialism reformulates it by stripping it of the economistic and evolutionist aspects stigmatized by its critics. By contrast, this article endeavours to understand the economic monism of the general statements of the materialist conception of history, and also its evolutionist features, as essential elements of this doctrine which set it in the general history of the social sciences in the 19th century. The concept of civil society played a strategic role by promising a break with the categories of traditional political philosophy and the opening-up of a new theoretical field, in which the social sciences established themselves. By making explicit the aspects through which the materialist conception belongs to its age, one is able to appreciate both its heuristic value and its limitations.

    Le matérialisme historique a aussi une histoire. II est de règle aujourd'hui, pour qui veut défendre le matérialisme historique, de le reformuler en le dépouillant des aspects économistes et évolutionnistes stigmatisés par ses critiques. On s'est efforcé au contraire de comprendre le monisme économique des énoncés généraux de la conception matérialiste de l'histoire, ainsi que ses traits évolutionnistes, comme des éléments essentiels de cette doctrine, qui l'inscrivent dans l'histoire générale des sciences humaines au 19e siècle : le concept de société civile a joué là un rôle stratégique, en promettant la rupture avec les catégories de la philosophie politique traditionnelle et le dégagement d'un champ théorique nouveau, où s'établirent les sciences sociales. Penser ce par quoi la conception matérialiste de l'histoire appartient à son époque rend possible d'en apprécier la fécondité heuristique, en même temps que les limites.

    Auch der historische Materialismus hat eine Geschichte. Reformulierungen zur Verteidigung des historischen Materialismus sind in der Regel heute so gehalten, daß sie die von der Kritik stigmatisierten ökonomistischen und evolutionistischen Aspekte fallenlassen. Hier ist dagegen versucht worden, den ökonomischen Monismus der allgemeinen Aussagen der materialistischen Geschichtskonzeption einschließlich ihrer evolutionistischen Züge als wesentliche Elemente dieser Lehre zu begreifen, die sich damit in die allgemeine Geschichte der Humanwissenschaften im 19. Jahrhundert einfugen : Der Begriff der 'bürgerlichen Gesellschaft' spielte darin eine strategisch entscheidende Rolle, indem er den Bruch mit den Kategorien der traditionellen politischen Philosophie und das Freiwerden eines neuen theoretischen Feld es, auf dem die Sozialwissenschaften angesiedelt wären, versprach. Die Reflexion darauf, wodurch die materialistische Konzeption der Geschichte ihrer Epoche verhaftet ist, ermöglicht es, sowohl ihre heuristische Fruchtbarkeit wie ihre Grenzen einzuschätzen.
