Etrusque et ionien archaïques sur un plomb de Pech Maho (Aude)

    The authors analyze a tablet found in Languedoc on the Pech Maho site. One side bears an inscription in Etruscan characters and the other side an Ionian text slightly more recent which could be dated back to the 5th century. The first fragmentary inscription yields no clear interpretation except for the fact that there is no doubt that the characters are those of the Etruscan language. The Ionian text which is better preserved gives information about a trade deal made in Emporion; it relates that the deal consisted in two successive payments and yields information about two Ionian dealers and two Iberian witnesses. This document is very noteworthy for the preciseness of the vocabulary and the language; it enlarges our knowledge of archaic Ionian, it brings the oldest testimonies concerning Iberian onomastics and confirms the important part played by Emporion in the process of hellenization of the Narbonnais coast.

    Les auteurs analysent une tablette opisthographe découverte en Languedoc (site de Pech Maho), portant sur une face un texte en caractères étrusques, sur l'autre un texte ionien, légèrement plus récent, attribuable au Ve s. Aucune interprétation claire de la première inscription, fragmentaire, ne peut être donnée, mais son assignation à la langue étrusque ne fait aucun doute. Mieux conservé, le texte ionien rend compte d'une transaction commerciale, réalisée à Emporion; marquée par des versements successifs, elle met en présence deux Ioniens et deux témoins ibères. Remarquable par la précision du vocabulaire et de la langue, ce document enrichit notre connaissance de l'ionien archaïque, apporte les plus anciens témoignages sur l'onomastique ibère et confirme le rôle important joué par Emporion dans l'hellénisation du littoral narbonnais.
