    Die Sikh in der indischen Gesellschaft. Die Krise, von die der Pandschab gegenwärtig heimgesucht wird, läßt sich nur unter Bezug auf die historische Identität der Sikh begreifen. Natürlich resultiert sie aus den ökonomischen, demographischen und sozialen Umwälzungen dieser Region zwischen 1960 und 1970. Der sich entwickelnde bäuerliche Kapitalismus, in Verbindung mit den dadurch anwachsenden Disparitäten und Migrationsbewegungen, hat das soziale Gefüge umgewälzt und das Aufkommen des politischen und religiösen Extremismus begünstigt. Dies hat allerdings nicht die Bezugspunkte und Symbole der Sikh-Kultur in Frage gestellt, sie im Gegenteil noch verstärkt, so daß alle sozialen Wandlungsprozesse im Pandschab in deren Rahmen zu lesen sind.

    The Sikhs within Indian Society. The present crisis in the Punjab can only be understood in relation to the Sikhs' historical identity. It does indeed stem from the economic, demographic and social changes which occurred in this region in the 1960s. The growing inequalities and the migratory movements which acompanied the development of agricultural capitalism shook the social fabric and encouraged the rise of political and religious extremisms ; but, far from undermining the references and symbols through which all social change is interpreted and expressed in the Punjab, they tended rather to intensify them.

    Les Sikhs dans la société indienne. La crise actuelle qui agite le Panjab ne peut se comprendre que si on la rapporte à l'identité historique des Sikhs. Elle résulte, certes, des transformations économiques, démographiques et sociales qui ont affecté cette région pendant les années 1960-1970. Le développement du capitalisme agricole, par les inégalités croissantes et les mouvements migratoires qu'il a entraînés, a bouleversé le tissu social et a favorisé la montée des extrémismes politiques et religieux mais sans remettre en cause, et même en les intensifiant, les références et les symboles de la culture sikhe selon lesquelles se retraduisent tous les changements sociaux au Panjab.
