    Management of the Unspeakable. Among the interviews conducted in the course of research on women concentration camp survivors, the interview with Ruth A. is particularly interesting because it shows how easily, but wrongly, silence can be taken for forgetting. The obstacles encountered throughout this interview and the discussions to which they gave rise bring to light the inscription of all individual history and memory in a collective history and memory. They also demonstrate that history and memories have to be related to their sites of production just as much as to the audiences for which they are intented. Such an analysis of the life story suggests that it has to be regarded as a reconstruction of identity and not simply as a factual narrative.

    La gestion de l'indicible. Parmi les entretiens réalisés dans le cadre d'une recherche portant sur des femmes ayant survécu dans un camp de concentration, l'entretien avec Ruth A. présente un intérêt particulier tant il montre à quel point le silence peut être facilement, mais faussement, assimilé à l'oubli. Les obstacles rencontrés tout au long de cet entretien et les discussions qu'ils ont provoquées ont mis au grand jour l'inscription de toute histoire et toute mémoire individuelles dans une histoire et mémoire collectives. De même ils ont fait apparaître qu'histoires et mémoires sont à rapporter aux lieux de leur production tout autant qu'aux publics auxquels elles sont destinées. Une telle analyse du récit de vie suggère qu'il doit être considéré comme une reconstruction de l'identité et pas seulement comme un récit factuel.

    Die Verwaltung des Unsagbaren. Unter den Interviews, die im Rahmen einer Untersuchung über in einem Konzentrationslager überlebende Frauen durchgefuhrt wurden, ist jenes mit Ruth A. von besonderem Interesse, insofern es zeigt, wie leicht — und gleichwohl fälschlicherweise — Schweigen mit Vergessen gleichgestellt werden kann. Die während des gesamten langen Interviews auftretenden Schwierigkeiten wie auch die da durch angeregten Diskussionen haben die Einbindung jeder individuellen Geschichte und jedes individuellen Gedächtnisses in eine kollektive Geschichte und ein kollektives Gedächtnis anschaulich vor Augen gefuhrt. Sie haben ebenfalls sichtbar gemacht, daß Geschichte und Gedächtnis ebenso auf den Ort ihrer Produktion zurückzuführen sind wie auf das Publikum, fur das sie jeweils bestimmt sind. Eine solche Analyse der Lebensbeschreibung legt es nahe, diese als Rekonstruktion von Identität und nicht bloß als faktische Beschreibung anzusehen.
