An introductory acid-base experiment for use in general chemistry is described. The students are asked to evaluate four indicators for a strong acid-strong base titration using dilute solutions of each. A conductivity probe is utilized to monitor the progress of the titration. By correlating the color changes for each indicator with the conductivity minimum, the indicators are evaluated for their suitability under the given conditions. After choosing the best indicator of the group, the same solution of standard base is used to titrate an unknown acid quantitatively using only the color change to gauge the volumetric endpoint.
