  • Resumen
    • The article presents an interview with doctoral student Yanping Tu about experiments she collaborated on that found people have greater negative feelings about sounds, images, and other people they perceive as approaching them. She says the same phenomenon exists to some degree even when the person approaching is a loved one. When a speaker approaches a group of listeners, she observes, feelings of warmth and friendliness can be intermingled with a sense one's space is being violated. She says public speakers might be better served by beginning a talk close to an audience and staying put
