    Bound Arachne : the Spinner and the Cloth-maker in the Middle Ages - Of all the workers employed in the rapidly spanding west European clothmaking industry in the Middle Ages, the spinner is at the same time the most mythicized and the most fooled ; the most frequently represented in iconographic sources - and the least often considered by technical statutes and regulations. Working with her own tools and at her own pace, the indépendant spinner would appear to have been in a position of strength in regard to the cloth maker. The article demonstrates how the latter, by imposing a system of countring based on the standardization of the weights of wool and lengths of hanks managed, however, to catch the spinner, in the way best suited to his own profit, into the weblike system of production prevailing in the mediaeval woollen cloth industry standardization of the weights of wool managed, however, to integrate the spinner, under conditions most favorable to himself, into the vast weblike system the medieval wollen cloth manufacturing industry.

    De tous les travailleurs de la grande industrie qu'était la draperie en Europe occidentale au Moyen Âge, la fileuse fut à la fois la plus mythifiée et la plus mystifiée, la plus mise en scène - par l'iconographie contemporaine... et la plus escamotée... par la réglementation technique. Propriétaire de ses outils de travail, travaillant à son rythme, la fileuse libre pouvait paraître en position de force vis-à-vis du drapier. Cet article montre de quelle façon, en imposant un système de titrage de la laine d'après un poids fixe et d'échets standardisés, celui-ci a néanmoins réussi à insérer la fileuse, dans les conditions qui lui convenaient à lui, dans la vaste toile d'araignée que constitue le système de production de la draperie médiévale.
