    Social Status and Spatial Position. The Social Geography of the Parisian Literary Field at the End of the Nineteenth Century. At the end of the nineteenth century, space in Paris bore strongly demarcated characteristics which varied from one neighborhood to another. This circumstance influenced where people in different fields of endeavor decided to live and the way they functioned in them. For example, an examination of the Parisian literary field at this period shows that writers, in choosing a residence, selected locations within the city's social space which corresponded to their positions in the field, these latter varying from proximity to the dominant pole, through the intermediate sector, to the dominated pole. The dominant pole was situated in the western part of the city, the intermediate sector in the ninth « arrondissement », near the « Boulevards », and the avant-garde in the outlying districts and in the Latin Quarter. This correspondence, which played a role in orienting literary strategies and in making writers conscious of their positions in the field and with respect to the different groups of the ruling class, can be explained by the localization of the institutions which selected the writers in accord with these positions. The writers close to the dominant pole were recruited through the « salons », a means of legitimation sponsored by the dominant group of the ruling class, this institution provided access to academic posts and prominent positions (e.g on the major literary reviews). Members of the intermediate sector gathered near the newspapers and the "boulevard" theaters, which were an important source of income for them. Finally the avant-garde was limited to the intellectual pole where the producers of the minor reviews were the same as the consumers. The spatial trajectories of the members of the main literary schools psycho ogical naturalist symbolist show how ,by means of this network of relations, link was established between literary strategies and social trajectories.

    L'espace parisien à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle est fortement doté de caractéristiques sociales selon les quartiers. Ceci influe sur la localisation des agents des différents champs et sur leurs lois de fonctionnement. L'exemple choisi, le champ littéraire parisien à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle, montre que les écrivains, selon qu'ils sont proches du pôle dominant, dominé ou du secteur intermédiaire, choisissent un lieu d'habitation qui, dans l'espace social parisien, occupe une place approximativement correspondante. Le pôle dominant se situe dans les quartiers de l'ouest, le secteur intermédiaire dans le neuvième arrondissement, près des boulevards, et l'avant-garde dans les quartiers périphériques ou au quartier latin. Cette correspondance, qui contribue à orienter les stratégies Littéraires et à la prise de conscience par les littérateurs de leur situation dans le champ et vis à vis des différentes fractions de la classe dominante, s'explique par la localisation des institutions qui sélectionnent les écrivains selon ces positions. Les écrivains du pôle dominant se recrutent grâce aux salons, instance de légitimation de la fraction dominante de la classe dominante qui les mène aux postes académiques et stratégiques du champ (grandes revues). Le secteur intermédiaire se rassemble autour des grands journaux et des théâtres de boulevard, sources de profits matériels. Enfin l'avant-garde se replie sur le pôle intellectuel où les producteurs sont en même temps consommateurs des petites revues. Les trajectoires spatiales des représentants des écoles littéraires principales (psychologues, naturalistes, symbolistes) montrent comment s'effectue, par l'intermédiaire de ces réseaux, la correspondance entre stratégies littéraires et trajectoires sociales.

    Soziale und geographische Situation. Versuch einer Sozialgeographie des literarischen Feldes Ende des 19. Jahrunderts. Die Pariser Stadtviertel waren Ende des 19. Jahr-hunderts sozial stark differenziert. Das wirkt sich auf die Wohnortwahl der in unterschiedlichen sozialen Feldern Tätigen ebenso aus, wie auf die Funktionsregeln dieser Felder. Im gewählten Beispiel, dem Pariser literarischen Feld, kann man zeigen, dass die Schriftsteller je nach ihrer Stellung zum dominierenden oder dominierten Pol, oder zu einem Zwischensektor ihren Wohnort wählen, der der Gliederung des Pariser sozialen Raumes entspricht. Der dominierende Pol befindet sich im Westen, der Zwischensektor im 9. Bezirk, und die Avant-garde in den Aussenbezirken und im Quartier Latin. Diese Ubereinstimmung zwischen sozialen und geographischen Positionen trägt zur Orientierung der literarischen Strategien und zum Bewusstsein der Schriftsteller über ihre Situation bei. Man kann dièse Ubereinstimmung durch die Standorte der institutionen erklären, die die Schriftsteller aufgrund ihrer Positionen auswählen; Die Schriftsteller des dominierenden Pois werden über die « Salons » ausgewählt, die Legitimations-instanz der herrschenden Fraktion der herrschenden Klasse, die sie auf die Sitze der Akademie und die strategisch wichtigen Positionen des Feldes (grosse Zeitschriften) führen. Der Zwischensektor entspricht den grossen Zeitungen und Boulevard-theatern, den Quellen finanziellen Profits. Die Avant-garde ist auf den intellektuellen Pol zurück-gezogen, wo die Produzenten gleichzeitig die wichtigsten Konsumenten kleiner Zeitschriften sind. Die räumlichen Lebenswege der Vertreter der wichtigsten literarischen Schulen (psychologische, Naturalisten, Symbolisten) zeigen, wie sichüber diese Netze die Ubereinstimmung zwischen literarischen Strategien und Sozialem Lebenswegeinstellt.
