Das Fest auf dem Dorfe Die Beobachtung der lokalen Feste in der Mayenne erlaubt es, die Veränderungen Aufzuzeigen, die die Welt der Bauern durchmachte. Der Ubergang von einem Dorffest, an dem aile Bewohner teilnahmen, zu einem Gemeindefest mit seinen Schaustellern und seinen Zuschauern ergibt sich aus der Verbreitung der städtischen Sichtweise der Bauern unter den Bauern. Die Organisation von stilechten «alten Festen», in denen man die Bauern dazu bringt, sich selbst zu spielen, ist dabei sicher ein Grenzfall. Die Mischung aus Ernst und Burleske, die die Vorstellungen kennzeichnet, die die Bauern von sich selbst haben, beweist jedoch die Doppeldeutigkeit einer Situation, in der sie nicht recht wissen, ob sie sich selbst oder andere darstellen. Suchen die Bauern, die der Macht, ihre eigene Identität zu definieren, beraubt sind und die fast immer von anderen die Definition dessen, was sie sein sollten, erhalten, nicht in dieser Rückkehr zu ihrem Ursprung in den Festen eine eigene soziale Identität ?

The Village Fete By observing local fetes in Mayenne the author was able to ascertain the effects of the transformations which have taken place in the world of the peasants. The change from the village fete, in which ail the inhabitants participate, to the communal fete, which, with its distinction between actors and spectators, is more like a show, can be correlated with the spread within the peasant milieu of the townsman's image of the peasantry. The organization of «fetes a l'ancienne», in which the peasants are encouraged to play themselves, is doubtless an extreme case. All the same, the mixture of serious and burlesque in the sketches that the peasants present of their way of life reveals the ambiguity of a situation in which they do not always know if they are playing at being themselves or at being someone else. They have been deprived of a hold on the social definition of their identity, and it is almost always from others that they receive the definition of what they ought to be. Through these fetes, then, the peasants return, as it were, to their origins ; are they not seeking in this way to recover a social identity of their own ?

L'observation de fêtes locales en Mayenne permet de saisir les effets des transformations qui ont affecté le monde paysan. Le passage de la fête villageoise à laquelle tous les habitants participent à la fête communale qui se rapproche plus d'un spectacle avec ses acteurs et ses spectacteurs est corrélatif de la diffusion en milieu paysan de la représentation citadine de la paysannerie. L'organisation de «fêtes à l'ancienne» dans lesquelles les paysans sont amenés à se jouer eux-mêmes représente sans doute un cas limite. Cependant le mélange de sérieux et de burlesque qui caractérise les représentations que les paysans se font de leur mode de vie, témoigne de l'ambiguïté d'une situation dans laquelle ils ne savent pas toujours s'ils jouent à être eux-mêmes ou à être un autre. Privés de la maîtrise de la définition sociale de leur identité, les paysans qui reçoivent presque toujours des autres la définition de ce qu'ils doivent être, ne cherchent-ils pas, par ces fêtes, à retrouver, en revenant aux origines, une identité sociale qui leur soit propre ?
