    Geschlecht Kleidung Symbole und Sozialismus 1830 war es die Freiheit, starke und begehrenswerte junge Frau mit entblösster Brust, die das Volk leitete, Achtzig Jahre später zertrümmert der Proletarier, seinen nackten männlichen Ober körper zeigend mit wuchtigen Hammerschlägen die Ketten der Welt. Was war in der Zwischen zeit geschehen ? Welches sind die Gründe für das sich Gleichbleibende : die Nacktheit und für die Veränderung : die Auswechslung der Frau durch den Mann ? Beide Fragen stehen im Zentrum dieses Artikels, worin Eric Hobsbawm zugleich ernsthaft und mit Humor ein noch immer unzu länglich erhelltes Thema angeht : Die Art und Weise nämlich in der eine öffentliche Gruppe, in diesem Fall die sozialistische Bewegung von ihren Anfängen bis heute, ihre Ikonographie will heissen den Vorrat an Bildern zur sinnlichen wie geistigen Präsentation und Repräsentation bei den Mitkämpfern und beim Publikum, sowohl konsti tuiert als auch modifiziert. Im Grunde ist damit das umfassende Problem des Verhältnisses zwisc hen der im Wandel ihrer konkreter Manifesta tionen erfassten Ideologie und den ökonomisch politischen Bedingungen gestellt; nicht in abstrak ter Allgemeinheit vielmehr anhand der dokumen tierten Studie eines konkreten und historisch bestimmten Phänomens, das selbst schon zu einem gut Teil Moment der Geschichte geworden ist.

    Sex, Symbols, Clothing and Socialism. In 1830, Liberty led the people - a strong and desirable young woman with naked breasts. Eighty years la ter, the Worker, a male naked to the waist, was breaking the chains of the bourgeois world with vigorous hammerstrokes. What happened in the interval ? Why this permanence -nudity ; and why this change -the man replacing the woman ? These are the two questions raised in this article, in which Eric Hobsbawm, adopting an approach which is both serious and humorous, looks at a subject that has been too little studied : the way in which a public group -here the socialist movement from its origins up to the present day- establishes and modifies its iconography, that is, the stock of images (whether drawn, painted, sculpted, or photographed) used to present it and to represent it to the eyes and the mind of both its militant members and the public at large. In essence, this brings up the whole problem of the relationship between ideology, as seen in the evolution of its concrete manifestations, and political and economic conditions. But here this problem is not raised on the level of abstract generalizations ; rather, the author deals with it by means of a documented study of a precise and well defi-ned phenomenon which is in large part historical.

    Sexe, symboles, vêtements et socialisme. En 1830, la Liberté guidait le peuple, puissante et désirable jeune femme aux seins nus. Quatre-vingts ans plus tard, le Prolétaire au torse mâle et nu casse les chaînes du monde à grands coups de marteau. Que s'est-il passé entre-temps ? Pourquoi cette permanence, la nudité, et ce changement, l'homme remplaçant la femme ? Telles sont les deux questions que se pose cet article, où Eric Hobsbawm aborde avec un sérieux humour un sujet trop peu étudié : la manière dont un groupe public, ici le mouvement socialiste de ses origines à nos jours, constitue et modifie son iconographie, c'est-à-dire le stock d'images (dessinées, peintes, sculptées, photographiées) destinées à le présenter et à le représenter aux yeux et à l'esprit de ses militants et du public. Au fond, c'est tout le problème du rapport entre l'idéologie, vue à travers l'évolution de ses manifestations concrètes, et les conditions économiques et politiques qui est ainsi posé, non dans la généralité abstraite, mais au moyen de l'étude documentée d'un phénomène précis et bien délimité dans l'histoire, à laquelle il appartient déjà pour une bonne part.
