  Describing and Prescribing. What makes political action possible is the fact that the representation agents have of the social world plays a part in shaping that world ; this means that one can try to modify the social world by modifying the representation agents have of it. Heretical subversion, aimed at revolutionizing the representation, clashes with orthodox restoration, which tends to conserve the established order by conserving the prevailing representation. Science cannot be neutral in this struggle, and the particular type of theory-effect it produces can be the starting point for rational action aimed at imposing the desired «possible» on the basis of knowledge of the probable.

  Décrire et prescrire. L'action politique est possible parce que la représentation que les agents se font du monde social, contribue à faire ce monde ; en sorte que l'on peut tenter de modifier le monde social en modifiant la représentation que s'en font les agents. La subversion hérétique qui vise à révolutionner la représentation se heurte à la restauration orthodoxe qui tend à conserver l'ordre établi en conservant la représentation en vigueur. Dans cette lutte, la science ne peut être neutre et l'effet de théorie d'un type particulier qu'elle exerce peut être au principe d'une action rationnelle visant à imposer le possible souhaité en se fondant sur la connaissance du probable.

  Beschreiben und vorschreiben. Politisches Handeln ist möglich, weil die Vorstellung der Handlungsträger von der sozialen Welt diese selbst mit konstituiert. In diesem Sinne kann man durchaus versuchen, eine Veränderung der sozialen Welt dadurch herbeizuführen, dafi man die Vorstellung der Handlungsträger von dieser verändert. Dabei stöfit die häretische Subversion mit dem Ziel der Revolutionierung der Vorstellung auf die orthodoxe Restauration, die die herrschende Ordnung zu erhalten sucht durch Erhalt der geltenden Vorstellung. In diesem Kampf darf die Wissenschaft nicht neutral bleiben : der von ihr ausgehende spezifische Theorie-Effekt kann zur Grundlage rationalen Handelns werden,dasgestützt auf die Erkenntnis des Wahrscheinlichen auf die Durchsetzung des gewollten Möglichen zielt.
