America, America : The Marshall Plan and the Importing of «Management». The «American model» was a major topic of discussion in French intellectual and social life in the 1950s. Economic and political questions (the Marshall Plan, the Atlantic Alliance) took second place in the debates of the time to a more fundamental question : the «nature» of «French society» as compared with «American society». These debates were particularly concerned with the «management of industry», «bosses» (patrons) and «executives» (cadres). Social technologies, such as group psychology, were imported, initially for the training of the intermediate personnel of industry, but subsequently, as they became more widespread, they helped to establish new forms of social control.

Dans les années 1950, les discussions autour du modèle américain occupent une place très importante dans la vie intellectuelle et sociale française. Les questions économiques et militaires (Plan Marshall, Alliance atlantique) sont, dans les débats d'époque, subordonnées à une question plus fondamentale qui est celle de la «nature» de la «société française» comparée à la «société américaine». Ces débats portent particulièrement sur la «gestion des entreprises», sur les «patrons» et sur les «cadres». C'est d'abord pour former le personnel intermédiaire des entreprises que seront importées des technologies sociales (comme la psychologie de groupe) dont la diffusion contribuera à l'établissement de nouvelles formes de contrôle social.

In den Fünfziger Jahren nehmen die Diskussionen um das amerikanische Modell einen gewichtigen Platz im sozialen und intellektuellen Leben Frankreichs ein. Dabei sind jedoch die wirtschaftlichen und militärischen Fragen (Marshall-Plan, Atlantisches Bündnis) von untergeordneter Bedeutung gegenüber der grundlegenderen nach der «Natur» der französischen Gesellschaft» im Vergleich zur «amerikanischen Gesellschaft». Drehpunkt der Diskussionen sind im wesentlichen «Unternehmenssteuerung», «Unternehmer» und «leitende Angestellte». Der Import sozialer Technologien (wie der Gruppenpsychologie), deren Verbreitung mithilft zur Etablierung neuer Formen sozialer Kontrolle, geschieht zunächst unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Ausbildung des Mittler-Personals.
