Les ouvrages généraux sur l'histoire de l'Église présentent l'Église irlandaise médiévale comme essentiellement monastique. En fait, les sources irlandaises originales — en particulier juridiques — écrites en latin et en irlandais ancien montrent que, loin d'avoir été relégué au rôle secondaire que les historiens lui ont attribué, l'évêque a continué à jouer un rôle majeur dans l'Église et la société irlandaise pendant tout le haut Moyen Âge. La recherche d'une définition du statut de l'évêque laisse entrevoir les interactions profondes entre culture chrétienne et culture indigène.

Bishops in early medieval Ireland - The traditional view in modern historiography has been that the early Irish Church was chiefly monastic. However, the seventh- and eighth- century sources written in Ireland, both in Latin and in Old-Irish, show that, far from having being replaced by abbots, bishops continued to play a major role in the Church and in Irish society throughout the Middle Ages. Together with a new definition of the bishop's position in Irish society, the study of these texts reveal the deep interaction between Christian and native cultures.
