Apoiado em uma abordagem histórico-geográfica, que permite analisar a constituição do território, busca-se estabelecer a periodização do segmento de rede urbana no Tocantins, considerando os processos de diferenciação entre seus centros, com destaque para os que desempenham papéis intermediários, desde o século XVIII, quando surgem os primeiros núcleos urbanos, no antigo norte da capitania de Goiás, até a edificação da capital, Palmas, no final do século XX.

Using a historical-geographical approach, which involves the systematic analysis of the constitution of territory, we present the historical phases of the development of urban networks in Tocantins State. Processes of differentiation between its centers since the 18th century are traced from the first urban nuclei, which arose in the north of colonial Goias, up to the building of the state capital, Palmas, in the new state of Tocantins by the end of the 20th century.
