    The excavation completed on the western part of the plantation La Caravelle in Martinique enabled the archaeological study of a building which was traditionally thought to be a prison. Implanted between the main house and the large storage warehouses, this small construction is divided into four identical rooms. This setting completely belongs to the organization and functioning of the sugar plantation this one dating back to the XVIII th century.

    However, its identification as a jail can be debatable. Indeed, the approach of the topographic organization of the different buildings, as well as the architectural data allows other assumptions.

    Is it a prison, a safety vault, a wind hut, or even a powder house? By exploring the different possibilities and their limits, this study suggests a mixed use of this space.

    La fouille réalisée sur la partie occidentale de l’habitation La Caravelle à la Martinique a permis l’étude archéologique d’un édifice traditionnellement reconnu comme des cachots. Implantée entre la maison principale et les vastes magasins de stockage, cette petite construction est organisée en quatre salles identiques. Cet ensemble participe pleinement à l’organisation et au fonctionnement de l’habitation sucrerie, datée ici du XVIIIe siècle. Toutefois, son identification, comme lieu de séquestration peut être discutée. L’approche de l’organisation topographique des différents bâtiments, comme les données architecturales autorisent en effet d’autres hypothèses. Est-ce un cachot, une chambre forte, une case à vent, voire un magasin à poudre ? Cette étude, en développant les diverses possibilités et leurs limites, amène à proposer une utilisation mixte de cet espace.
