The world of the “madness” is a field which was seldom explored by archaeology. Iconographic and textual sources inform us on certain aspects of these problems and in particular on the passage of treatments resting largely on the “magic thought” with hospital treatments but the material data are rare. However a favourable context (reconversion of many old hospitals) allows already and will give access (if an attentive follow-up of work is programmed) news and invaluable information on the typology of the structures of internment and care before the creation of departmental psychiatric “asylums”. We give some examples here of them in order to show all the potential of this rich matter relative to the concepts of humanity and mental health…
Le monde de la « folie » est un domaine qui a été rarement exploré par l’archéologie. Si des sources iconographiques et textuelles nous informent sur certains aspects de cette problématique et notamment sur le passage de traitements reposant largement sur la « pensée magique » à des traitements hospitaliers, les données matérielles sont rares pour ne pas dire inexistantes. Cependant un contexte favorable (la reconversion de nombreux hôpitaux anciens) permet déjà et permettra d’accéder (si un suivi attentif des travaux est programmé) à de nouvelles et précieuses informations sur la typologie des structures d’internement et de soins avant la création des « asiles » psychiatriques départementaux. Nous en donnons ici quelques exemples afin de montrer tout le potentiel de cette riche matière qui approche au plus près les concepts d’humanité, de raison et de (dé)raison…
