Perfil de los estudiantes de bibliotecología y ciencias de la información de la Universidad de Costa Rica

    El artículo brinda las características demográficas, académicas, laborales y económicas de la familia, del estudiante de bachillerato de la Escuela de  Bibliotecología y Ciencias de la Información (EBCI) de la Universidad de Costa Rica, en el año 2011.  El objetivo propuesto en esta investigación fue elaborar un perfil de los estudiantes que cursaban en ese momento el Bachillerato Bibliotecología y Ciencia de la Información (BBCI), tomando en cuenta las características mencionadas en las primeras líneas de este resumen. El estudio es cuantitativo, exploratorio y descriptivo. Cada característica se analiza en forma general y para cinco variables de control. El estudio se basa en un censo en el que participaron 201 estudiantes activos de los programas de bachillerato que ofrece la EBCI. Las principales conclusiones fueron que la población estudiantil mayoría es mujer, esta condición se mantiene en todos los grados que ofrece la escuela; hay mayoría de mujeres estudiantes de las poblaciones rurales, mientras que la población masculina en su mayoría pertenece al área metropolitana. Esta situación afecta a los estudiantes que deben buscar un empleo con el fin de ayudar económicamente a sus familias.

    The paper provides demographic, academic, labor features and economic characteristics of the family, of a the student population of the School of Library and Information Science (EBCI for its acronym in spanish) of the University of Costa Rica, in 2011. The proposed objective in this research was to develop a profile of the students studying at the time the School Library and Information Science (BBCI for its acronym in spanish), taking into account the features and characteristics mentioned in the first lines of this summary. Each feature is analyzed generally and for five control variables. The study was quantitative, exploratory and descriptive. For this study, a census of the student population was conducted; in it 201 students participated of the baccalaureate programs offered by the EBCI. The main results were: the majority of the student population is female, and this condition is maintained at all the levels offered by the school; there is a majority of female students from rural populations, while the male population mostly belongs to the metropolitan area. This situation affects the students to look for a job in order to help their families financially. We conclude that although most students do not formally work, they probably work in the university under an informal mode as assistants. Some of the variables analyzed in this profile manifested by age and race courses that major changes.
