Resumen de Remediation of red mud using Orbite technology

Kasia Patel

  • The company, on a non-commercial basis, signed an agreement to partner with Veolia Environmental Services in the construction of the first red mud treatment plant using Orbite's patented eco-friendly technology, which recovers the entire commercial value of Bayer process tailings and can extend the lifespan of Bayer plants, Denis Primeau, Orbite's chief engineer, told IM.

"Initial composition of red mud can vary depending on the bauxite origin, the operating conditions, and so on," the Primeau said. "Orbite's technology has the flexibility to process raw material feed of various compositions. This enables the treatment of red mud coming out of any alumina plant." "Orbite's technology has been demonstrated to resolve the current worldwide problem of storage of environmentally dangerous red mud," the company said. "[The process] separates the individual valuable and marketable components of the red mud (or the selected raw material) sequentially and recycles the acid used. [It] therefore allows the recovery of a large part of the alumina normally wasted in the Bayer process."
