The octagonal pillar from Antef II is the oldest direct archaeological trace from the sanctuary of Amun at Thebes. Its inscription contains some extraordinary signs. This note explores the iconic potential of the idiosyncratic form of the wAst-sign created for the Theban ruler of the XIth dynasty. It is visual-poetic. This specific usage of writing with a high prestige was used here to express royal claims.
