    Le tatouage est une limite symbolique dessinée sur la peau, elle fixe une butée dans la recherche de signification et d’identité, elle est une sorte de signature de soi par laquelle l’individu s’affirme dans une identité choisie. Nous sommes aux antipodes des attitudes rebelles d’autrefois où le tatouage marquait une appartenance populaire, virile, un peu voyou, et à l’inverse dans une attitude consumériste. Le tatouage est aujourd’hui banalisé, il ne recèle plus rien de subversif, il est l’affirmation d’une esthétique de la présence.

    A tattoo is a symbolic border outlined on the skin that sets a boundary in the quest for meaning and identity; a kind of personal signature with which an individual asserts a chosen identity. This is a world away from the rebellious attitudes of the past, where a tattoo was a statement of virile, working class identity, with something of the desperado – and the antithesis of consumerism. Today, tattoos are banal, with no hint of subversiveness; they are the assertion of an aesthetic of presence.
