The reasons, that about thirty years ago in the post-war Germany made possible this traction system with DH locomotives, are presented. The developments achieved both for main-line locomotives and humpo locomotives are studied.
The high maintenance costs are the main problem of this type of traction whose future lines of evolution aim to an unique motor equipment with about 3000 horsepower and regulation by means of semi-conductor electronics, multiple traction and at distance by wireless.
