Short-stator maglev technique means installing of the active propulsion components (linear motor, power conversion) on board of the magnetically suspended vehicles, a power collection being necessary for its energy supply. Improved technical concepts will be described, basing on a self-centering electromagnetic suspension using U-shaped armature rails. The propulsion system consists of liquid-cooled linear induction motors, to be controlled by modern inverter technology. The improved levitation and guidance technique incorporates two major advantages: being uncoupled, linear motor performance as well as that of magnetic suspension can be dimensioned independently; in addition the suspension configuration permits high constructional compatibility with the motor design. The essential technical objectives of the present development program are as follows: simple design of the trackside rail equipment (availability, capital investment, maintenance requirements), low level track loading (capital investment), simple vehicle design (vehicle weight, maintenance requirements, reliability, vehicle costs).
