Origins of developments in non-conventional railway systems are described, pointing out main properties, advantages and disadvantages of such systems.
Pneumatic tube, adherence, and pneumatic levitation systems are briefly commented. Magnetic trains with their different sustentation and propulsion techniques are specially stressed, analyzing possible combinations for intercity and urban services.
A review of test and prototypes in different developed countries is finally done.
