Light rail can be defined as an “on-track means of transport” which can be developed in stages from modern tramways, in order to achieve an underground or on-viaduct means of transport. From this definition, the International Committee on Light Rail Transport has explored two different paths of study:
In first place, it analyses the evolution of urban transport means till the 80’s, ending with the proposal of light rail transport as a solution for two reasons: energy crisis and living standards. Next, it deals with the elements of light rail systems, such as: fixed installations, rolling stock and operation; analyzing,, in depth, all of them, giving some of the most conflictive ones.
Finally, it studies how the operation can reach an optimum, by means of computer/controlled systems.
The functions of these systems are the following:
-Instant control: in this system the continuous flow of information between the vehicles and the control centre enables an overall view of the operating system, making it possible to correct any deviation from the pre-stablished scheme.
-Deferred control: it enables, through data-processing systems, the elaboration of some statistics. These can be used to produce the future planning. Used data will be those related to traffic and operation.
