John Stuart Mill works like Janus, looking at two fronts: an front is utilitarianism, singularly defended in Utilitarianism; the other front is liberalism, presented with impeccable style in On Liberty. What is been discussed since your time is if he can unite the two perspectives sufficiently, joining them. Another question is whether we can claim that Mill uses (or not) the term autonomy in his writings and can connect it properly to the idea of individuality, widely advocated in Chapter 2 of On Liberty. This will be our task in this work.

John Stuart Mill trabalha como Janus, olhando para duas frentes: uma frente é o utilitarismo, defendido singularmente no ensaio Utilitarianism; a outra frente é o liberalismo, apresentado com irretocável estilo em On Liberty. O que se discute, desde seu tempo é se ele consegue unir suficientemente as duas perspectivas, juntando-as, entrelaçando-as. Outra dúvida é se podemos alegar que Mill utiliza (ou não) o termo autonomia em seus escritos, podendo conectá-lo adequadamente à ideia de individualidade, amplamente defendida no capítulo 2 de On Liberty. Esta será a nossa tarefa neste trabalho.
