Topografía e historia general de Argel es una fascinante crónica escrita por el clérigo portugués Antonio de Sosa, quien describe, desde la perspectiva de su cautiverio hacia finales del siglo XVI, la sociedad argelina bajo el esplendor del reinado turco. En este artículo, subrayo la importancia de conocer la identidad del autor para una mejor comprensión de los motivos que empujaron su publicación anónima y de la perspectiva empleada por el narrador para describir y juzgar la vida, virtudes y pecados de la sociedad que examina. Además, me interesa resaltar la complejidad y las inconsistencias de Topografía. El libro oscila entre una dura invectiva contra la sociedad argelina y la alabanza a ciertas virtudes de sus habitantes, entre la fascinación por el otro y su completo rechazo .

"Topography and General History of Algiers" is a fascinating chronicle written by the Portuguese cleric Antonio de Sosa, who describes, from the perspective of his captivity in the late 16th century, the Algerian society under the splendor of Turkish rule. In this article, I stress the importance of knowing the author’s identity for a better understanding of the reasons that pushed its anonymous publication and of the perspective employed by the narrator to describe and judge the life, virtues and sins of the society he observes. Also, I emphasize the complexity and inconsistencies of Topography. The book oscillates between a harsh attack against the Algerian society and praise of certain virtues of its inhabitants, between fascination for and complete rejection toward the Other
