El siglo XXI se caracteriza por la eclosión de la revolución biotecnológica que está marcando nuestra forma de ver y entender el mundo así como nuestra vida diaria, aunque no seamos del todo conscientes. Pero, ¿qué es la biotecnología y para qué sirve? ¿Es una tecnología realmente nueva o una actividad científico-técnica más que busca una mejor calidad de vida de las personas? ¿Realmente contribuyen a un mayor bienestar o son una amenaza para el medio ambiente y la supervivencia de los seres vivos? Así pues, la biotecnología es un campo de investigación y aplicación que trata cuestiones controvertidas que necesitan de una reflexión ética seria y en profundidad.

The 21st century is characterized by the blooming of the biotechnological revolution which is marking our way of seeing and thinking the world and our daily life although we are totally aware of it. But, what is the biotechnology and what is used it for? Is it a really new technology or a scientific activity which looks for improving our life quality? Do they assure our welfare or are they a danger to the environment and organisms? In this way, biotechnology is an area of investigation and applications which is about controversial issues that need a serious and profound ethical reflection.
