Tanto en el De vita et moribus como en su ms. autógrafo de Terencio, Boccaccio se refiere al autor de las seis comedias como "Terentius Culleo". En contra de lo que se ha pretendido hasta ahora, el error no puede explicarse como herencia medieval: si es cierto que los accessus más difundidos atribuyen al comediógrafo Terentius Afer un episodio de la vida del senador Terentius Culleo, ni en aquellos ni en las rúbricas de los mss. aparece hasta entonces el nombre "Terentius Culleo". La denominación utilizada por Boccaccio solo se entiende como homenaje a Petrarca, que había resuelto brillantemente el error implícito en los accessus distinguiendo con precisión las biografías de ambos personajes e identificando el origen de la confusión; no sabemos por qué medios le llegó a Boccaccio la aportación de Petrarca, pero el hecho es que la interpretó exactamente al revés al creer que consistía en sostener que el comediógrafo se llamaba en realidad "Terentius Culleo".

In the De vita et moribus as well as in his autographic ms. of Terence, Boccaccio refers to the author of the six comedies as "Terentius Culleo".This mistake, contrary to what has been accepted until now, cannot be explained as a medieval legacy: it is true that the more extended accessus assign to the writer of comedies, Terentius Afer, a passage of the life of the senator Terentius Culleo;however, the name "Terentius Culleo" never appears nor in the accessus neither in the rubrics of the mss. The name used by Boccaccio can only be understood as homage to Petrarch, who had brilliantly resolved the isunderstanding implicit in the accessus, and had precisely distinguished the biographies of both characters, identifying as well the origin of the confusion; nothing is known about the means by which Petrarch's contribution reached Boccaccio, but the fact is that Boccaccio understood it the wrong way thinking that the true name of the comedy writer was "Terentius Culleo"
