Los ejemplos son un componente esencial de los textos gramaticales de todos los tiempos. Hoy en día nos solemos servir de fórmulas introductorias más o menos fijas y también de marcas visuales, como pueden ser comillas, cursivas, etc. En la Antigüedad no existían estas últimas y, además, los ejemplos tendían a estar perfectamente integrados en la frase, especialmente si eran nominales; cuando esto no era posibles se recurría a algunos mecanismos que se repasan someramente.

Examples are a basic component of grammatical texts of all times. Nowadays, we tend to make use of more or less introductory formulae and of visual marks, namely quotation marks, italics and so on. In antiquity such visual marks did not exist and, furthermore, examples used to be part of the phrase, this was particularly so in the case of nouns; when this was not possible, there was a tendency to resort to a number of mechanisms that will be here briefly reviewed.
