Resumen de Lenda de Santa Iria: De virgem a mártir (a dificuldade de retomar os tempos que se atrasam)

The legend of Saint Iria (or Irene or Eyrea), of the Portuguese calendar, has been the subject of interpretations and study for decades, but the problems inherent in it have never been satisfactorily resolved. In the present article, we take up those of most significance in such a manner that, while respecting the diachronic development of the cult, one does not ignore the attributes of the saint herself. For us, these was a moment in which the characterization of Iria / Eyrea as «virgin» (that dates from very early) became associated with the additional characterization of «martyr»: the resulting legend, that spread and is known since the 15th century, is explainable only in light of this association, even if it passed through various stages of textual elaboration. We identify a number of circumstances that may clarify the process of formation, without pretending to have explained all.

A legenda de Santa Iria / Irene / Eyrea, do calendário português, tem sido objecto de várias interpretações e estudos ao longo de décadas, mas nenhuma dessas interpretações resolveu problemas pendentes. Procuramos neste artigo estabelecer e avaliar as hipóteses que sejam mais englobantes, de tal modo que, respeitando a diacronia do culto, se não perca o sentido da caracterização da santa. Quanto a nós, houve algum momento em que a caracterização de Iria / Eyrea como «virgem» (atribuição mais antiga) associoutambém a atribuição de «mártir»: a legenda que foi divulgada e é conhecida desde o século xv só é explicável por essa associação, mas nós identificamos várias fases de elaboração textual. Aduzimos algumas circunstâncias que podem clarificar o processo, sem, no entanto, pretendermos encerrar as questões.
