  • Resumen
    • Since electronics appeared, it has been possible to design underground railway vehicles using equipment different from the ones used up to that time and able to provide energy savings.

Although there are not important modifications to improve classical starting and braking equipment, it is possible to incorporate an electronic control providing energy regeneration on vehicle braking.

However, the best system existing at present on several metropolitan networks seems to be the starting and braking equipment by thyristor chopper. After describing the operation of a similar equipment existing in Brussels cars, the results obtained using analogue equipment in different metropolitan networks are explained.

Chopper equipment provides firstly energy saving, eliminating rheostatic losses on starting, and allowing then regenerative braking. However, this is only possible if braking energy of a vehicle slowing down can be transmitted to a vehicle starting.

In order to obtain complementary energy saving using these equipment, they can be connected to reversible substations, as they allow the retransmission of energy regenerated at d.c. by regenerative braking vehicles to the ac high voltage network. Although this system has been studied by different networks, its use is limited.
