  • Resumen
    • The efforts made to partly palliate the effects of the energy crisis on national economies have led, in transport field, to increase the attention given to railways. In the framework of this potentially and when analyzing the different king of traction for busy lines, electrification proves a helpful resource to profitability.

An analysis about the effects, of the energy crisis on the national field of the transport is carried out, explaining, firstly the present condition of the situation as for the energy used by the different systems of transport and with regard to their flexibility or stiffness in relation with the origin of the supply. It must be outlined the low specific consumption or railways in comparison with other transport systems.

In the railway field, it is set out the different factors contributing, from the point of view of the energy balance and supply diversification, to increase the use of electric power on railway traction, taking into account the particular conditions of the national network. Then, the electrification development in RENFE, starting with a short historic introduction. The 1974/79 electrification plan, that has brought important benefits, is studied from the point of view of its purposes and the technical choices realized for its carrying out. The future developments are included in the 1980/91 General Railway Plan that foresees to stretch the number of Km electrified up to 10.000, on which about the three quarters of the whole traffic has to run.
