  This study explores the ways in which music functions in Lope de Vega’s "El castigo sin venganza" and in its English adaptation, "Punishment without Revenge", performed by Theatre Royal Bath (England) during the 2013 season. It examines musical references and their significance in Lope’s original work, and how performances of Punishment adapted those references into flexible, practical, and powerful musical scenes that supported the work’s dramatic structure, technique, and ideology
