The construction of knowledge in Social Work arises from the relationship between theory and practice that requires a conceptual clarification allowing discuss the nature of the relationship. It is in the relationship between the social worker and the user that we find the connection between theory and practice, submitted to the methodological procedures. The methodology always subscribes a theoretical option, having more or less consciousness, but is also related with the different contexts that framing the social intervention, what makes essential distinguish methods and intervention models. At least, in the methodological framework of Social Work, it is necessary to highlight the social diagnosis according with its importance in the social worker intervention

A construção do conhecimento em Serviço Social nasce da relação entre a teoria e a prática, o que torna exigente uma clarificação conceptual que permita problematizar a natureza desta relação. É na intervenção do assistente social, mais especificamente na relação entre o profissional e a pessoa utilizadora dos serviços que se dá a ligação entre a teoria e a prática, operacionalizando-se nos procedimentos metodológicos. A metodologia subscreve sempre uma opção te- órica, mais ou menos consciente, sem excluir os diferentes contextos em que o profissional se insere, e neste sentido importa distinguir conceitos como método e modelo de intervenção. Por último, ainda no âmbito metodológico do Serviço Social, destaque no processo de intervenção, para a elaboração do diagnóstico, pela importância que configura na intervenção profissional.
