    St. Tomás, Arzobispo de Canterbury (Becket - c. 1118-29, diciembre de 1170) se convirtió en uno de los más célebres y controvertidos eclesiásticos en la Inglaterra del siglo xii. Después de su trágica muerte a manos de soldados _pero no bajo órdenes directas del rey Enrique II (1133-1189)_ fue elevado mártir inmediatamente por el papa Alejandro III (1159-1181). Su culto se propagó rápidamente y su santuario en Canterbury se convirtió en un importante lugar de peregrinación en Inglaterra y el continente. La reina Leonor de Castilla fundó la primera iglesia dedicada a Santo Tomás Becket en la Península Ibérica en Salamanca. St. Vicent Ferrer dedicó un sermón a él titulado, Sermo Sancti Thome de Cantorbere. Este estudio es el primero en explorar su contenido pedagógico, teológico y moral. Puesto que la Legenda Aurea es su principal fuente, intento señalar el material que proviene de la Legenda Aurea y donde añadió materia novedosa.

    St. Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury (Becket-c.1118-29 December 1170), became one of the most celebrated and controversial churchmen in twelfth century England. After his tragic death at the hands of soldiers- but not under direct orders of King Henry II (1133-1189) -he was elevated to martyr immediately by Pope Alexander III (1159-1181). His cult spread rapidly and his shrine in Canterbury became straightway a major place of pilgrimage in England and the Continent. Queen Eleanor of Castille founded the earliest church dedicated to St. Thomas Becket in the Iberian Peninsula in Salamanca. St. Vicent Ferrer dedicated a sermon to him entitled, "Sermo Sancti Thome de Cantorbere". This study is the first to explore its theological, moral, and pedagogical content. Since the "Legenda Aurea" is his main source, I seek to ascertain which stories from the "Legenda Aurea"" he integrated and where he embellished.
