The article discusses the Japan's changing of its military policy under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to assert more power internationally and develop what the author considers is a strategy of realism. An overview of the history of Japan's foreign policy of pacifism from 1945 through the early 21st century, including U.S.'s role in this regard, is provided. The relationship between China's increase of power and Japan's military policy change away from pacifism is discussed.
