Resumen de Recanati 1510: Lotto e i suoi satelliti

Stefania Castellana

  • This study relates to the connections between artists in Recanati around 1510. At the beginning of the 16th century, Recanati enjoyed a particular vivacity, especially because of its trade show. A small group of painters were associated with Lorenzo Lotto, who arrived in Recanati in 1506 to paint the polyptych of San Domenico. One of the group was Johannes Hispanus, whose paintings are newly attributed here. In the period Hispanus and Lotto came into contact several times, between Recanati and Montecassiano (and later, also Monte San Giusto). Niccolò Peranzone, a humanist from Montecassiano, who returned to the Marches in 1506, probably after a past experience between Venice and Dalmatia, was involved with them. Two other painters were also working around Recanati and Montecassiano at that time: Marchisiano di Giorgio from Tolentino and Lorenzo di Giovanni de’ Carris, called Giuda, fron Matelica, both of Slavic origin. Lotto and his ‘satelites’ –of varying degrees of importance- obscured the local masters: documents only remain about Simone di Giovanni Corvi, a local painter from Recanati.
