  • Resumen
    • Within the field of track elements, there are two specific problems which constantly call the attention of the railway technician. These are:

      - Traffic on crossings.

      - Traffic on switch rails.

Here, the first problem will be studied, taking into account only traffic on acute crossings, that is, crossings where the angle formed by the tangents, to the core, at the bottom, is acute.

Of course, because of the increase of speeds and loads per set of wheels, the design tolerances required are very accurate as they play a very important role in the obtention of the high quality in crossings used today.

When the set of wheels goes over a crossing, there may be bumps of the wheels against different parts of the crossing with damaging results for the fixed and mobile material.

The four cases we can actually meet are:

      - Wedging of flanges in the corresponding inside or outside crossings.

      - Bumping of the inner surface of the wheel against the entry groove of the crossing.

      - Bumping of the active border of the flange against the end of the core.

      - Laying-in of the inner surfaces of the set of wheels between the check rail and the wing rail.

Then it is also analysed the passage of a wheel over a void in a curved crossing, with the condition that the swept surface on the wing rail is the biggest possible one in order to decrease the weardown effects as much as possible.

Finally, it is studied the effects of the wheel on the check rail, where two basic situations are given when the set of wheels gets near the check rail:

      - Ideal trajectory coinciding with the track axis.

      - Actual trajectory imposed by the hunting movement.

Giving all the necessary hypotheses to obtain the solution of the actual problem.
