  • Resumen
    • The development of a new technique implies the need of controlling the effects it creates. That gives rise to a series of measuring techniques which sometimes are more complex than the very equipment tested.

This article shows the tests carried out by Westinghouse, S.A. with Units 440 from RENFE, equipped with Chopper, producing new registration methods of harmonics and an analysis program for them.

After a short explanation of the Chopper operation -transformer of DC to another direct current, but of an amplitude which can be changed at will-, the theoretical spectrum of main harmonics and transients produced by the Chopper, whether single or multiple-phased, as well as those created by a substation, are studied. Then, an actual verification of this theoretical spectrum of harmonics is carried out, registering the harmonics -studying the devices used, the evaluation of noises, registering the calibration current and that of the catenary- and evaluating the harmonics, examining the devices used, the signal filtering, the basic establishment of the analysis operation, the sampling of the analogical signal, and carrying all the data to a punched tape and the production of Fourier's transforms and final results of the consequences created by them.

The advantages of this system are the following ones: tests with the train are very simple; the transductor for measuring current and the production of a very wide information.
